1. Milan
Stay
About the destination: With something almost Northern European in the air, yet exuding Italian style, Milan is Italy's most cosmopolitan city. The capital of Lombardy is both hardworking and glamorous - powerful in businesses from finance to fashion and, of course, football. But what gives Milan its certain something is its status as the epicentre of Italian fashion and interior design. International fashionistas, designers, supermodels and paparazzi descend upon the city twice a year for its spring and autumn fairs: Milan, which has carefully guarded its reputation for flair, drama and creativity, is Italy's natural stage. This is certainly one of the best places in Italy to shop, or windowshop. Milan is the main industrial, commercial and financial centre of Italy and as such, is unsurprisingly business-like in appearance. At first glance, it lacks the wow factor, but if you take time and are determined to explore Milan’s streets, you’ll access its aesthetically appealing gems – and they do exist. Cut through the modern metropolitan bustle, and you will stumble across impressive churches and palaces, the pretty Navigli area, the chic Brera district and lively university quarter, and no need to mention a landmark such as the Duomo, or that the city is impressively home to Leonardo da Vinci's 15th century masterpiece The Last Supper. Milan cannot be faulted when it comes to having a good time. The Milanese know how to party – and they don’t waste time getting started. Nightlife tends to kick off at 6pm; enjoying an aperitivo in which locals unwind with post-work drinks and nibbles before heading home is the rule rather than exception. So whether you’re looking for cut-price fashion, an alternative city break or a chance to paint the town red, Milan has undoubtedly got it covered.

2. Rome (Province)
Stay
About the destination: Rome Province, surrounding the Eternal City, offers a rich tapestry of landscapes, historic towns, and coastal escapes that complement any visit to Rome itself. Stretching from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the rolling hills of Lazio, this region is dotted with ancient ruins, medieval villages, and Renaissance villas, all easily reachable on day trips from the capital. It’s the ideal base if you want to balance big-city sightseeing with quieter, more authentic corners of central Italy. To the north of Rome, the Lakes District is a peaceful alternative to urban bustle. Lake Bracciano is crowned by the perfectly preserved Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, where you can wander through grand halls and climb towers with sweeping views. Nearby, the smaller Lake Martignano is a protected natural area, popular with hikers and swimmers seeking a tranquil, car-free environment. Charming lakeside towns serve local wines and fresh lake fish on scenic terraces. Heading south, you reach the Castelli Romani, a cluster of hilltop towns long cherished as Rome’s countryside retreat. Frascati is famous for its white wine and noble villas, while Castel Gandolfo, overlooking Lake Albano, was once the Pope’s summer residence and still exudes a serene, aristocratic atmosphere. These towns are ideal for leisurely lunches in rustic trattorias, tasting porchetta (roast pork) and other regional specialties under vine-covered pergolas. On the coast, resort towns such as Santa Marinella and Anzio boast sandy beaches, clear waters, and relaxed promenades, perfect for a day by the sea after intensive museum visits in the city. History buffs can explore Roman ports and archaeological sites, while nature lovers follow coastal trails and enjoy dramatic sunsets over the Tyrrhenian. With frequent trains and buses from Rome, the province is easy to explore, rewarding curious travelers with a diverse mix of culture, cuisine, and countryside.
